New device called "The Sleeve" that is designed to help prevent school shootings.

Teachers at an Iowa school have created a device that could save the lives of students during a mass shooting. The invention is called “The Sleeve,” a 12-gauge carbon steel case that fits around the door’s closer arm, securing the door from the inside, according to WQAD.

The Sleeve can withstand more than 550 foot-pounds of force. It is supposedly nearly impossible to open from the outside. Teacher Daniel Nietzel at West Middle School in Muscatine got the idea for The Sleeve after participating in the school’s active shooter training.

“We were instructed to tie a belt or a cord around the closer arm. It seemed like a logical way to secure a door without having to go into the hallway, [but] it took us a long time to get a cord, stand on a chair, and tie a knot, which could potentially be the most important tie of your life.” said Nietzel.

“I can tell you in our training, all five rooms that the teachers were trained in; the doors were breached, the cords were ripped, and the officer who was portraying the active shooter came in and killed all of us,” Nietzel said.

In an effort to find a better solution, Nietzel started a company with other teachers, Fighting Chance Solutions, and designed the blueprints for The Sleeve.

“We look at it as a cheap insurance policy. If you have someone out in the hallway, and you have an active situation, a dangerous situation unfolding and [don't] want to go out into the hallway and lock your door, we want to provide you with a way to close that door,” said Nietzel.

"My hope," said Edwin Colón, one of the product’s developers, "is to show the rest of our nation that we have to be proactive in addressing this issue that is not going to go away."

“I think it’s a great product. It’s going to buy kids and teachers time for shootings,” said Muscatine Police Chief Brett Talkington. “These shooters [are] going to be pulling on the door. If they can’t get in, they’re going to move on.”

Know what else could help? If parents would teach their kids about guns and the importance and all that good stuff and the kids knew how to use them and do it right. Or at least knew how to handle a knife or hand to hand combat. But not all kids are like that so it seems like this "Sleeve" might be helpful.

Don't give nutters guns would actually be the best solution. The problem with teaching kids how to use knifes is you'll have then the possibility of increased stabbings as a result of giving kids the tools to kill and we all know some kids would do it (the nutters ).

But, this is an interesting invention, although I'm not sure how they would be able to get it to all school systems in the U.S...

Huh. That could certainly prove useful. Certainly some added security. It won't stop a truly determined person though. Given that the hinges would need to be on the outside. But it'll certainly supply a great deal of security against the average spree killer, who's just there for the purpose of killing as many people as he can.
Though, as Minifig said, getting them on most doors in most schools would be rather difficult to do.

@Arwin: Hand-to-hand would likely be more useful in general. Simply since the no weapons policy would prevent knives. Now, another thing that would likely be helpful would be a few armed guards, or something along those lines. People who have the capability to bring down the shooter fast, so he doesn't have the several minutes until the police arrive.

@Roddy: The main problem of course being that it's basically impossible to keep them out of the hands of those who would use them wrongly. If they want a gun... They'll find a way to get their hands on them.

Yes, more security would actually probably be a lot more helpful, although I can imagine in some cases that it could be the cause of a shooting, but that's a very unlikely possibility.

If anything, gun laws need to be more higher standard, so that not just anyone can go and buy a legal gun. If I recall correctly, places like Australia (it might have been a different country, I'm not entirely sure) updated their gun laws a while back after a mass shooting, and they haven't had one of note since.

Either way, there has been a huge increase in shootings in 2014, and they only continue to increase. Whether or not it's this invention, something needs to take place to better ensure the safety of students and the general public.

I think it could be very useful, but like MD said, it cant be the only defense against this, and relying on kids knowing hand to hand combat is, frankly, not a solution. A gun is still a gun, no matter how much krav magra, akido, or judo you know. We still need regulations on this, at least background checks for those purchasing, and online regulations for sale of ammunition and firearms.

Roddy: Agreed, but it all depends on the kids personality. Some kids are raised to know if they lay a finger on a gun without permission they'll get punished. Some do well and others not so much and don't give a dang.

JJS: Good point, and yes, some guards would be good.

MD: The thing is though, yes it maybe perhaps should be harder to get a gun, but like JJS said, they'll find a way.

Something for everyone to always keep in mind. Guns aren't the ones pulling the trigger. Its people.
